Description About the Project

The Royal College Hostel - Senior Section has been facing persistent water supply challenges, causing significant inconvenience to both students and the staff. The existing system is inadequate to meet the daily needs of hostellers, affecting essential activities such as bathing, drinking, and washing. This ongoing issue disrupts student routines, leading to frustration and inconvenience. At times, students are even compelled to cross the playground to the Junior Section for their water needs, particularly during peak hours.

Furthermore, the insufficient water supply impacts hostel cleanliness and sanitation, posing potential health risks. The hostel's kitchen and dining hall, which rely on the same limited water supply, further strain the system. The lack of adequate pressure prevents showers from functioning properly, making the situation even more challenging.

To address these ongoing issues in water supply, the Royal College Old Hostellers Association (ROCOHA) has initiated a comprehensive project to upgrade the hostel's water supply system. This project includes:

  • Increasing water storage capacity from 11,000 litres to 24,500 litres
  • Enhancing gravity pressure by raising the overhead tanks from 13 feet to 20 feet, ensuring adequate water flow for showers.
  • Implementing a fully automated pumping system with an advanced electrical panel, allowing two motors to function alternately for maximum efficiency.

This initiative has been thoroughly evaluated and approved by the Principal, Royal College, Royal College Union (RCU), Infrastructure Advisory and Management Committee of RCU, and the Finance Committee of RCU.

The total estimated cost of this project is 1.4 million LKR.
